Swing music, also known as swing jazz or simply swing, is a form of jazz music that originated in the United States in the early 1930's and evolved into a distinctive style by 1935.
Fueled by big bands such as those of Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington, this music, with its exciting rhythms, became especially popular as dance music. The heyday of swing music lasted from around 1930 to the mid-1940's.
Some characteristics of the music from this period include:
- Use of a swing rhythm
- Often medium to up tempos
- Instrumental solos take center stage in the music
Swing is distinguished by its rhythmic distribution and specific phrasing and is an indispensable part of the jazz idiom.
